What Is Black Mold?

"Black mold" is a term used to refer to certain types of mold that have a dark greenish-black or black appearance. The most common species of black mold is Stachybotrys chartarum, which is known for producing toxic compounds called mycotoxins.

Black mold typically grows in damp or humid environments, such as in areas with water damage or high levels of moisture, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. It can also grow on building materials, such as drywall, ceiling tiles, and wood.

Exposure to black mold can cause a variety of health effects, including respiratory problems, allergies, and in some cases, more serious health conditions. People with weakened immune systems, such as infants, children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses, may be particularly susceptible to the harmful effects of black mold.

If you suspect that your home may have black mold, it is important to have it professionally inspected and removed, as attempting to remove it yourself can be dangerous and may actually spread the mold spores.

Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
